Adult Education at United Church

We believe that Christian Education is a lifelong venture that includes struggling with scripture and the stories of our faith that challenge us to be in right relationship with God and our community. We seek to offer meaningful Christian Education programs for every stage of life.

Regular church programs take a break in the summer time.  This summer we will offer our regular Wednesday morning Bible study and have special programs in June.

Wednesday Sermon Shaping (Library, 7 am)

On Wednesday morning we look at the suggested texts for the coming Sunday. The pastor who will be preaching leads the study, and participants can occasionally hear their comments or insights in Sunday’s sermon. Join us in the library and help shape the sermon! Yes, coffee and tea are provided!

Coming Sundays this June:

Meeting in Silence:  Developing a Practice of Prayer and Meditation

(Room 161, 10 am)
June 13, 20, and 27.
Prayer and meditation are powerful spiritual disciplines that ask us to find some quiet time in our busy lives to get to know God and ourselves better. In our time together, we'll learn about the principles of mindfulness meditation and centering prayer; we'll also have a chance to sit in silence each time we meet. You are encouraged to come and share your experience with these and other silent spiritual practices as we discuss the rewards and obstacles encountered in trying to establish and maintain a home practice of daily prayer and meditation. We’ll also explore how prayer and meditation can help us negotiate all kinds of life experiences and deepen our faith.  For more information, please contact office@unitedchurch.org.

June Book Study - The Shack, by William Young

(Family Parlor, 10 am)
June 13, 20, and 27
Cely Chicurel and others will lead a discussion on Williams Young’s best-selling novel -  The Shack. The Shack follows a conversation with a man and God, following the tragic death of his daughter.  The novel  wrestles with the timeless question, “Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?”

Please check This Week for details on current offerings.

During the church year (September - May) we offer many adult education opportunities.

Adult Forum (Fellowship Hall)

A variety of current topics of interest are discussed in Adult Forum. Topics may be discussed for one week only or in short series. Richard Edens leads this forum with a number of invited guest speakers. See a current newsletter or This Week to learn about coming topics or speakers.

Faith and Family (Room 229)

Monday Book Group (Library, noon)

Join Richard Edens and others to discuss books concerning church history, theology or current events from a Christian perspective. Bring a bag lunch and join us. Books are available for purchase.

Wednesday Evening Programs (dinner from 5:45 - 6:30, programs from 6:30 - 7:30)

Nurturing both faith and fellowship, United Church has three Wednesday evening series during the program year. The first in September, Wednesdays Together, welcomes everyone back from their summer break and newcomers to our community. In January, we interrupt January’s darkness with Light Up Your Winter; and as a preparation for Easter’s joy we engage our hearts and minds in a Lenten Series. We begin each evening with a simple supper provided by the Fellowship Board from 5:45 to 6:30 (donation of $7 for adults and $3 for children, not to exceed $20 per family) followed several program options from 6:30 to 7:30.

UCCH Library

The UCCH Library is situated between the Narthex and the Fellowship Hall, so you can easily stop by any time and particularly during the coffee hour between services. The Library’s holdings cover a wide range of topics, with particular strength in materials on Christian experience and life and Christian social theology (including many social justice issues). The Library also holds collections of fiction for adults and a children’s collection. You can read in the Library, or you can borrow books by signing them out on paper slips near the Library door. If you have any questions about the Library or would like to become a Library volunteer, please contact Barbara Wildemuth.

Coming this fall:

Fall Retreat at Blowing Rock Conference Center (October 15-17, 2010)

Come to the mountains for a beautiful fall color weekend for both structured programs and fun for all ages.
