Hunger Service
Inter-Faith Council for Social Service (IFC)
For 45 years, the Inter-Faith Council for Social Services has provided shelter, food, direct services, advocacy and information to people in need. IFC shares its HQ with other non-profits: El Centro Latino, El Futuro, People of Faith Against the Death Penalty, Building Futures/
JOCCA. Ways to contribute include:
Casseroles
Fill a church pan with lasagna, chili, mac & cheese, with or without meat or poultry, or your favorite casserole that freezes and is moist. Label contents and put in the church chest freezer. We serve these casseroles twice a month at the IFC Community Kitchen.
IFC Food Pantry
Bring a jar of peanut butter, a can of beans, a bag of rice, a jar of pasta sauce, or another
non-perishable food item! We collect food each Sunday for a community pantry in Carrboro
that is available to people in crisis. Look for the basket in the Narthex.
Join a team to serve a meal
We serve dinner (5:30 to 7 p.m.) on the second Thursday of each month and lunch (10 to 12:30 p.m.) on the fourth Thursday of each month. The Community Kitchen is located at the corner of Rosemary and Columbia in Chapel Hill. See the schedules on the Bulletin Board.
Homestart
We provide a home-prepared monthly meal for the women and children living at the Homestart shelter on Homestead Road.
Five Thrive Drive
Nearly one in four children live in households that struggle to put food on the table. That's 16.7 million children. Summertime is an especially hard time as children are out of school and families are struggling to put 3 meals on the table.
In response to this need we have started our Five Thrive Drive. For each month of the year with five Sundays we will be having a themed food collection drive. Collected food will go to the local IFC Food Pantry in Carrboro. Our first drive, Peanut Butter and Jelly Sundays, was a huge success as we collected over 125 jars of sandwich makings. July’s theme is Italian Night Out as we collect Pasta and Sauce and October will focus on soup during Super Soup Sundays.
Bread For the World
Bread For The World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. UCCH joined hundred’s of other BFTW congregations with its own letter writing campaign on May 15, 2011. Participants watched a presentation on current issues regarding international hunger and poverty and scripted personal letter to Congress regarding their desire to continue the vigilant support of aid to those in desperate need.
