Lenten Activities
WALK TO JERULSALEM
United Church of Chapel Hill invites you to join in our Lenten Season “Walk to Jerusalem” - a distance of just over 6000 miles. The goal is to reach Jerusalem by Easter. To accomplish this, we must collectively accumulate 1000 miles each week over the next 6 weeks (beginning on Ash Wednesday). For our purposes, 20 minutes of walking or any aerobic activity can be counted as 1 mile.
Read more about the walk here.
Use the Daily Log here to keep track of your miles. Copies are also available on the Health Ministries Bulletin Board.
Submit your weekly miles here. If you prefer to submit a paper copy of the weekly tally forms, they are available on the Health Ministries Bulletin Board in the Fellowship Hall.

The accumulated mileage of all members will be recorded each week and our progress along the journey will be charted by moving the marker along the map on the Health Ministry bulletin board.
Remember to check with your doctor before starting this walking program if you have any chronic health problems or have not been active on a regular basis.
For more information, email our Parish Nurse, Aly Breisch.
LENTEN 2011 FAST FROM CARBON
In recent years our congregation has called for a fast from carbon for Lent to raise awareness of our global climate situation. In 2008 and 2009, we challenged one another to make our homes and households sustainable. In 2010, we discerned the impact of our diet and shared favorite recipes, as we realized that our diet is a major contributor to climate change.
This year, 2011, we are inviting the congregation to reclaim hope for a future with less carbon-based intensity by recalling joys in their life that were not energerized by carbon. We invited people to offer stories about low carbon activities that sustain families and build community. It is our sincere hope that you will find some inspiration in some of the stories to copy or to come up with your own version. We hope that you will turn off the TV or the x-box and get out a deck of cards or ride the bike to the local restaurant instead of driving to the big mall.
Enjoy!

ASH WEDNESDAY
March 9; Lenten Soup Dinner 6 pm; Service 7 pm
Ash Wednesday begins the 40 days of the season of Lent. Lent is a time of preparation for the joy of Easter. On Ash Wednesday human mortality is underscored (literally). During the Ash Wednesday service there is the opportunity for ashes to be placed on our foreheads as a reminder of our mortality, our flesh. [ . . . you are dust and to dust you shall return . . . Genesis 3:19] But it also points to the one who created us, and thus the service
becomes a pronouncement of hope and grace. Join us at 6 pm for a simple Lentil Soup dinner sponsored by the Board of Adult Education and join us at 7 pm for our Ash Wednesday Service in the Sanctuary.
ADULT FORUM -- The Death and Resurrection of Jesus
The death and resurrection of Jesus -- Good Friday and Easter -- are utterly central to Christianity and have been from the 1st century. But how do we understand them now in the 21st century? Marcus Borg, much read historian of Jesus and Christian origins, shares his understanding of the death and resurrection of Jesus and their meaning to the early church.

A GREEN REVIVAL, April 10 –17
Yes, we are going to have a revival here at United Church! Please clear your calendar and plan to engage in your Lenten study with Dr. Eric Mount, professor emeritus of religion at Centre College, ordained Presbyterian minister and father of Mary Faith Mount-Cors. Dr. Mount will present 5 lectures: two on Sunday mornings (April 10 & 17) and three in the evening (Sunday, Monday & Wednesday). The excessive individualism of our culture is undermining our community and our earth — which is our body. His lectures will offer a faithful critique and a sacramental vision of an alternative life which will build up the community and heal the earth.
