Lay Caregiving at United Church: Being a Good Neighbor
Being a good neighbor means providing simple expressions of care that anyone can do. These expressions take the form of writing notes, making casseroles, pray for those who ask for prayer. Email Pastor Jill Edens, jedens@unitedchurch.org if you wish to become a caregiver. An orientation is given once annually, but you may join anytime of year.
Once you have joined the network, you will be contacted by email or phone about the needs of the congregation. Follow the buttons on the left for helpful hints about how to supply those needs by preparing and delivering meals, writing notes and cards, and visiting fellow parishioners. You are free to respond as often or seldom as you wish. And in fact are encouraged to do so. We have so many volunteers that no one need feel guilty about how many responses to care needs that they are able to make. This is key to the success of this program. Responses from individual volunteers whether many or few are always welcome and appreciated. One important thing to be aware of as a caregiver is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), enacted to help people keep their health information private. For information about how United Church complies with this act, read HIPAA at United Church. |
