The UCCH library has a number of books and tapes related to prayer. Many of them are devotionals. Here is a sampling: Book of Daily Prayer, Morning and Evening (2001, 2002, 2003). These three years of this book contain daily meditations, prayers, and scripture that cover the entire lectionary cycle. A good way to start prayer every day. Glimpses of Grace: Daily Thoughts and Reflections by Madeline L'Engle God's Little Devotion Book Sacred Journey: A Woman's Book of Daily Prayer by Jan Richardson Weavings - A periodical on with meditations on dozens of subjects (e.g., compassion, wisdom, creativity). Excerpts from the latest edition can be found at the website: http://. Wrestling With Angels: An Intimate Look at Tough Questions of Life (Tapes) Writing with Light: Meditations for Caregivers in Word and Image by Robert Merrill Eddy and Kathy Wonson Eddy. A great mood-bender. Other Books Open Mind, Open Heart: The Contemplative Dimension of the Gospel by Thomas Keating. (First in a trilogy, followed by The Mystery of Christ and Invitation to Love. The Power of Prayerful Living, by Doug Hill. This book gives guidance on how to approach a specific issues such as chronic or terminal illness, healing friendships, or job pressures. It has inspirational prayers, poetry, and stories along with some scriptural references. What does praying “do”? When I pray at bedtime, before falling asleep, I know I am doing all I can do at that precise moment to deal with any problems I am having, and that I can sleep knowing I have left it in good hands. Praying has often given me something to hold onto when, in very dark moments, I felt like everything was spinning out of my control. I didn’t have to say anything more than “God, God”
The fruit of silence is prayer, the fruit
of prayer is faith, the fruit of faith is love, the fruit of love is
service, the fruit of service is peace.
Nowhere can you retire with more quietness or
more freedom than within your own spirit. Constantly give yourself
this retreat, and renew yourself. |
