Visiting or "making calls" to people in the hospital, nursing home, or sick at home is an important symbol of care and concern.  Visiting says "you matter,"  "we are thinking about you," and "you are a part of our community."  As a visitor, you are representing the church family; remembering this fact may make it easier to visit someone that you do not know well.  You will be notified by call or email when visits are needed.  If you are able to visit, please respond so that we will know that each person receives at least one visitor.  If you decide to visit, please contact Jill Edens for concerns specific for the person who is ill and their family.  In the meantime, the items below are some things that are good to remember when planning or conducting any visit.

If a person is homebound for a period of time, there may be a coordinator assigned.  Please contact the coordinator directly if one is assigned.

Keep the visit short!

You may want to write out a card to leave in case the person you are visiting is not available.

When visiting in the home or nursing home, call in advance to make arrangements for a visit.  You may want to say "I would like to come by for a visit, when is a good time for you" or the like.  Even if the person says "anytime," actually make a plan.  Most people are more comfortable knowing in advance that someone will be coming.

When visiting in the hospital, respect the visiting hours that are posted, call in advance when possible.

If you discover additional needs of the person or family, report these to the coordinator or one of the pastoral care staff for follow-up even if you are willing to meet these needs.

A visit is intended to express the love, care, and concern of the church family.  You are not visiting to provide medical information, do problem solving, or counsel.

Most folks will be pleased that you came to visit, accept their appreciation graciously.

Some folks may feel like they need to entertain you or take care of you when you visit- remember why you are there.
